Kid's Summer Holidays

Well, we're just 4 days away from Jareds summer holidays.  Ryan started his at the end of May, so he's been home for almost a month already.  Once Jared starts staying home all day, it'll take a bit of the pressure off.  The pressure is that Ryan can't do anything by himself, he wants to play with me all day.  Of course, that's not possible.  I have a contract I need to finish off, which is way overdue, and I have all the other household stuff going on.  Spending 8 hours a day playing with Ryan is impossible.

The summer should be fun!  We're starting off by heading to the in-laws for the long weekend.  We're picking Jared up straight from school and driving out.  When we come back, we'll be doing cartown where kids between 4 and 7 learn how to drive.  I've heard it's a blast!  We'll also be doing a lot of camping (as long as the mosquitoes keep down), biking, and hiking.  I'm hoping to get Ryan on to 2 wheels in the next couple of weeks, which will make things better for him.

If I remember correctly, last summer passed by really quick.  This summer is likely to go just as fast, and I want the boys to have lots of fun!

Overheard at breakfast
Jared: Ryan, what do you think is the highest number?

Ryan:  Ummm, the last number?

Early Rising IV

Well, I've reached my goal.  I now get up at 5:00 AM Monday to Friday.  On Saturday I allow myself to sleep in, but no later than 9:30, and on Sunday I'm up at 7:00 AM with the boys.

The mornings have been partially productive.  I've gotten some writing done at least every day, but I need to be really careful about my Internet usage.  If I get on the Internet first thing in the morning, I can waste all of my time far too easily.

I'll post on my 5:00 AM progress in another couple of weeks, to let y'all know how it's going.

From the mouth of babes…

Yesterday, Marnie was driving the boys home from soccer (I was out).  This is the conversation they had:

"'How does Uncle Gregor have enough food?" asked Ryan.
"Why do you want to know?"  Marnie asked in return.
"Because he lives in his car!" said Jared.

Later at home, the conversation resumed with:

"How does he get books?"
"How does he get money?"

Hey, Marnie and I thought it was hilarious!  My brother does live in his car! (It's an secure link with a bad certificate, just click past the warnings to get through)

Early Rising III

I thought I'd post an update on the early rising thing.  My alarm is now set for 5:15 AM, and I'm out of bed before 5:25 AM.  Not too bad.  I'm finding that about 2:00 PM I get this massive wave of exhaustion come over me.  Total wipeout.  If I sit for any reason, chances are I'll be out.  The good news is that I'm out for about 15 to 30 minutes and then I wake up refreshed.  By 10:00 PM, I am really wasted.

For the last two days, I've 'pushed' through the feeling, and gotten a second wind.  I do some yard work or house cleaning.  As long as I'm not sitting, I can make it.  Today, for the first time since I pushed the clock to before 6:00 AM, I actually feel like I have some energy left this evening.  We'll see how it lasts.

On weekends, I sleep-in.  On Saturdays usually to 8:30 AM, and then I lie in bed and work or read.  Sunday is my turn to get up with the boys, so it's usually 7:00 AM.  I'm considering moving my weekend wake ups earlier as well, just to keep the pattern going.  Well see.

On Tuesday or Wednesday next week, I'll move the alarm to 5:00 AM.  That's pretty much where I want to be at this point, so it'll stay there for awhile.

My brother and his wife are blogging about their extended vacation.  They didn't blog while traveling all over Asia, but they are blogging about their stay in the Rockies.  Check out my Blogroll in the right hand column for a link to the site.
